🔥 Fireside Chat with Tobias Baumann on Avoiding the Worst 🔥
🔥 Virtual Fireside Chat with Tobias Baumann: Avoiding the Worst 🔥
📅 Tuesday, June 24th, 6:30pm CEST
📍 Zoom
If you received Avoiding the Worst at an EAG(x) conference and haven’t yet read it, this event is designed to give you the motivation to dive in.
Tobias Baumann will join us for a live discussion about his book, which explores one of the most ethically urgent challenges of our time: How can we reduce the risk of worst-case outcomes involving astronomical suffering — so-called s-risks?
The book engages with:
- why avoiding extinction alone is insufficient as a moral priority,
- how emerging technologies, especially advanced AI, may increase the likelihood of severe suffering on vast scales,
- and what strategies — in decision theory, moral philosophy, and institutional design — could meaningfully mitigate these risks.
The event is open to anyone interested in asking the author questions — ideally after reading the book before June 24th. This fireside chat will offer an intellectually rich, informal setting to explore the reasoning and implications behind Baumann’s work.
You can also download the book here and think of your questions.
